Start with the building’s needs
ENERGY STAR emphasizes correct sizing: equipment that is too large or too small can compromise comfort and performance. Selection should start with a heating and cooling load calculation appropriate to the building. Read the source
Understand the indicators
SEER2 describes seasonal cooling efficiency; HSPF2 describes seasonal heating efficiency. COP compares heat delivered with energy consumed under specified conditions. A seasonal rating therefore does not replace operating data at a particular outdoor temperature. Read the source
Questions for a useful quotation
- What heating capacity is available at the project’s design temperatures?
- What is the exact indoor and outdoor unit combination?
- How will any backup heat be coordinated with the heat pump?
- What sound levels, clearances and service access should the project allow for?
- Which performance records, warranty terms and commissioning documents will be supplied?
Make comparisons consistent
Give each equipment combination its own row in the purchasing comparison. Record the conditions behind the advertised figures instead of comparing results obtained under different conditions. Ask the professional to identify missing data. An undocumented field is a question to resolve before ordering, rather than a reason to assume two systems are equivalent.
Plan for operation
We recommend agreeing who will explain the controls, where manuals will be kept and how maintenance and service requests will be handled. In a multi-unit building, maintain a record for each system so the team can find the right model details after handover. A documented equipment choice should support both the initial purchase and the people who will operate the building.
